Georgia-Pacific’s Day Street Mill listed for sale after over a century of operations

The historic mill, which closed in 2023, shaped Green Bay’s identity as a paper industry hub and could soon be redeveloped for new purposes

Georgia-Pacific has officially listed its Day Street Mill, a historic site in Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States, for sale. The property, along with 50 acres of surrounding land, was placed on the market on December 12, with Colliers Wisconsin, a third-party real estate broker, overseeing the sale.

“We have received significant interest in the Day Street property from various companies and organizations and have begun exploring the process of selling the property,” said Chris Brennan, a representative from Georgia-Pacific, in a statement.

The mill, which ceased operations in 2023 after 122 years, was important in establishing Green Bay as a key hub for the paper industry in the country.

The historical importance of the mill was highlighted by Ali Smurawa, an education specialist at the Neville Public Museum in Green Bay: “Northern Tissue Company actually says they made the first ‘splinter-free’ toilet paper right here in Green Bay, actually at that mill, the Day Street Mill”.

Smurawa also emphasized Green Bay’s legacy in paper manufacturing. “Paper making has changed a lot over time, and Green Bay is actually known as the toilet paper capital of the world. I know a lot of people hear Green Bay and think ‘Green Bay Packers,’ but I always say ‘toilet paper capital of the world,” she added.

FUTURE OF THE PROPERTY UNDER DISCUSSION

With the sale process underway, Green Bay officials are considering rezoning the area for new commercial and residential developments. The proposal seeks to preserve the historical significance of the mill while creating new opportunities for its use.
