Domtar Paper Company has announced the installation of an anaerobic digester treatment system at its packaging mill in Kingsport, Tennessee, United States. The initiative aims to enhance wastewater management and mitigate odors at the facility.
“Receiving the final approval from senior leadership is a major milestone for us and, more importantly, for our community”, said Troy Wilson, manager of the Kingsport mill. “We are committed to being responsible corporate neighbors”.
Construction of the new system is scheduled to begin in late 2025. According to Steve Henry, president of Domtar’s paper and packaging division, the project was designed using the best available technology to meet the mill’s wastewater characteristics. “We are confident this investment will provide long-term, sustainability benefits to the mill, community and our customers by lowering our environmental footprint and enhancing our reputation in the Kingsport community”, he stated.
In December 2024, the company secured US$60 million in state-issued tax-exempt municipal bonds to help finance part of the project.
