Essity strengthens production in Spain with a € 24 million investment in Puigpelat

The company expands its capacity for incontinence products and plans new lines of feminine care and tissue paper at its plant in Catalonia

Essity, a company specialized in hygiene products, has invested € 24 million in its factory in Puigpelat, Alt Camp, Spain, to implement a new line of incontinence products. The investment responds to the increase in demand in this segment, linked to the aging population, and will enable the manufacture of adult diapers under the Tena and Orly’s brands, destined for both the Spanish market and other European countries, including France, Italy and Portugal.

As part of its expansion plan, Essity plans to add two additional production lines at this plant by 2025, dedicated to feminine care products and jumbo tissue paper. The expansion is aligned with the company’s plans to strengthen its presence in the Spanish market and meet growing demand. As of 2019, Essity’s total investment in Puigpelat exceeds €100 million.

The new incontinence line has an annual production capacity of 150 million units, including pads of different sizes and absorbency levels. According to estimates, six million people in Spain suffer from incontinence, of which two million are chronic cases.

Essity’s plant in Catalonia is recognized as the company’s only plant in Europe that combines the production of personal hygiene products with tissue paper. In addition to Tena and Orly’s, Essity’s portfolio includes brands such as Colhogar, Tork, Lotus, Leukoplast, JOBST and Demak’UP, among others.

Present in Spain since 1976, Essity employs 1,300 people at various facilities in the country, with 750 workers in Catalonia. Its other production centers are located in Allo (Navarra) and Telde (Canary Islands), and it also operates a logistics center in Sant Joan Despí (Barcelona), which opened in 2021 and currently employs more than 200 people. In 2023, Essity reported a global turnover of € 13 billion.
