Kruger proposes $700 million plan to modernize Corner Brook Pulp and Paper

Proposed transformation includes renewable energy, infrastructure upgrades, and support for Newfoundland’s forestry sector

Kruger Inc. has announced a proposed $700 million diversification strategy aimed at transforming Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited into a modern and sustainable manufacturing complex. The company said the project is designed to secure the mill’s long-term future, contingent on timely alignment with key industry partners and government stakeholders.

The plan includes significant upgrades to paper manufacturing operations, a new pulp storage facility, site infrastructure improvements, and new chip handling and biomass systems to enhance the cogeneration plant. It also calls for investments in the Deer Lake and Watsons Pond hydro facilities to maximize capacity and the construction of a private wind farm to support operations.

Kruger said the initiative would sustain jobs at Corner Brook Pulp and Paper, support the provincial forestry sector, and create additional employment during construction. It also anticipates potential expansion opportunities for sawmills in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Despite ongoing market headwinds, the company expressed confidence in the long-term potential of the Corner Brook site. Kruger is currently in discussions with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to advance the project, emphasizing that stakeholder alignment is critical to moving forward.
