Svante signs agreement with DOE to study carbon capture in the pulp and paper sector

Project aims to evaluate innovative solution to reduce CO2 emissions in the industry

Environmental technology company Svante has signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to carry out a preliminary study on carbon capture in the pulp and paper industry. The investment could reach US$1,499,889 and will be shared with partners Paper Excellence and Wood.

The Pre-FEED (Preliminary Front End Engineering Design) study will be conducted at the Ashdown Pulp Mill, located in Arkansas, and will investigate the feasibility of capturing the CO2 released from the recovery boilers. This analysis will serve as the basis for developing a commercial solution that contributes to decarbonizing the sector.

Svante’s technology uses an innovative rotating solid sorbent system based on metal-organic framework (MOF), which employs low-grade waste heat to capture CO2. This process significantly reduces energy consumption and operating costs compared to conventional methods.

With the final investment decision (FID), the company estimates that its technology could remove up to 1.5 million tons of biogenic atmospheric CO2 through sustainable biomass. In addition, the project could open up new revenue opportunities with the sale of carbon removal credits (CDR) on the voluntary market.

“Svante’s MOF-based carbon capture technology has the potential to revolutionize how industrial facilities manage their emissions, and we are confident that this project will pave the way for wider industry adoption,” said Claude Letourneau, president and CEO of Svante.

This breakthrough comes shortly after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Svante and carbon capture and storage (CCS) service provider Tenaska. The two companies will combine their solutions to offer an integrated CO2 capture and storage alternative to their customers.
