Essity launches new Tork guide to improve restroom experience

Tork has introduced a set of recommendations designed to help businesses optimize restroom facilities, improve user satisfaction, and enhance operational performance

Essity, through its professional hygiene brand Tork, has released a new guide aimed at helping businesses transform restrooms into spaces that support both user satisfaction and business performance.

According to research cited by the company, a significant gap exists between user expectations and the realities faced by visitors and cleaning staff. Based on these insights, Tork’s recommendations focus on three key areas: inclusive hygiene, environmental sustainability, and operational efficiency.

Olivia Slater, Commercial Director of Professional Hygiene at Essity, stated that when restroom needs are not met, businesses may suffer as people tend to spend less time and money on-site. She added that targeted improvements in restrooms can deliver meaningful benefits for both users and cleaning teams.

INCLUSIVE HYGIENE

Survey data referenced in the guide indicate that 59% of respondents believe businesses can improve their image by providing restrooms that meet the needs of more people. Essential features include easy-to-use toilet paper and hand towel dispensers, privacy-enhancing layouts, disposal bins for personal items, physical accessibility such as grab bars and ramps, availability of hand towels, and caregiver-friendly facilities like changing stations.

PROMOTING SUSTAINABILITY

Tork also highlights restrooms as an often-overlooked area for reducing environmental impact, with 67% of respondents expressing a desire for restroom managers to prioritize sustainability. Recommended actions include promoting sustainable practices through signage, selecting third-party certified products, reducing waste through controlled dispensing, and supporting recycling initiatives such as PaperCircle.

SUPPORTING OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY

To empower cleaning staff and improve guest experiences, the guide advises adopting data-driven cleaning, installing high-capacity dispensers, using compressed towels to extend service intervals, and sourcing products with ergonomic packaging.

Essity emphasized that investing in inclusive hygiene, sustainability, and operational support helps meet evolving public expectations while contributing to stronger business performance.
