Cottonsie bets on natural cotton to reduce the environmental impact of disposable diapers

Product replaces plastic with cotton in key layers and offers up to 82% biodegradation within 18 months

Cottonsie has announced the launch of a new plant-based disposable diaper. Developed with patent-pending technology, the product features natural cotton in multiple structural layers and, according to the company, achieves a biodegradation rate of 82% within just 18 months.

The key innovation lies in the partial replacement of plastic materials with breathable cotton in layers that come into contact with the baby’s skin, including the top sheet, back sheet, acquisition distribution layer (ADL), and core wrap. The company aims to deliver performance comparable to conventional diapers, with significantly lower environmental impact.

According to Cottonsie, cotton contributes to a drier and more breathable microclimate inside the diaper, helping to reduce the risk of diaper rash. While synthetic components are still used to ensure effective absorption and leakage protection, the diaper is designed to be both functional and more sustainable – without sacrificing convenience.

Nicole Richards, founder and CEO of Cottonsie, explained that the product was created to meet growing consumer demand for practical yet natural alternatives. “Plastic diapers are clogging our landfills and leaching toxins into the environment. We created Cottonsie to give parents a real alternative: a high-performance, comfortable diaper made mostly from natural, biodegradable materials – and priced accessibly for everyday use”, she said.

The company highlights that the product is intended to fill a gap between reusable cloth diapers – which are known for generating less waste but are less convenient – and traditional disposables, which rely heavily on plastic and petroleum-based materials.

With this launch, Cottonsie positions itself in the growing eco-friendly diaper segment, expanding the range of sustainable options in the disposable personal care market.
