The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) and the American Wood Council (AWC) have expressed approval following the DC Circuit Court’s recent ruling on Boiler MACT regulations. In a joint statement, AF&PA president and CEO Heidi Brock, alongside AWC president and CEO Jackson Morrill, commented on the decision.
“We are pleased the court affirmed EPA’s (and our) position that the already stringent air pollution limits for industrial boilers satisfy the requirements of the Clean Air Act”, the statement read. Brock and Morrill highlighted the significant investment made by the forest products industry, amounting to approximately US$1 billion to reduce boiler emissions. They emphasized that this ruling provides regulatory certainty, allowing for the continued production of sustainable forest products in the U.S. while also supporting well-paying manufacturing jobs.
Furthermore, the statement welcomed the court’s decision to apply newly tightened emission limits only to boilers constructed after 2020: “This will provide mills with the information needed to comply when installing new boilers”, they noted.
