Georgia-Pacific to permanently close its Memphis cellulose plant and technology center

The company pledges to support affected employees and maintain safe operations during the transition

Georgia-Pacific, an Atlanta-based company and one of the world’s leading producers of paper, pulp, and consumer products, announced the permanent closure of its Memphis, Tennessee, cellulose plant and its Technology and Innovation Center.

The decision will affect approximately 130 employees at the plant and 22 at the technology center, with most positions expected to be eliminated by early December. According to the company, this measure is intended to benefit the GP Cellulose business and reflects the challenging market conditions facing its products.

In the coming weeks, Georgia-Pacific will focus on continuing safe operations while supporting employees throughout the transition. The company will assist those interested in exploring other opportunities within Georgia-Pacific, other Koch companies, or externally, offering job placement resources and career fairs.

Georgia-Pacific will also work with local union leadership to negotiate the effects of the decision in accordance with the existing agreement. The company confirmed that all employees will receive their full earned wages and benefits at the time of separation.

After considering all possible options — including a potential sale of the mill — Georgia-Pacific will keep the facility in sale-ready condition should an interested buyer emerge.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to safety, responsibility, and employee support during this period of transition.
