Ontex introduces bio-based SAP in diapers to reduce carbon footprint

New material reduces emissions by up to 25% and marks a key milestone in Ontex’s strategy to lower Scope 3 emissions through smart raw material choices

Ontex Group NV is advancing its sustainability strategy with the integration of bio-based superabsorbent polymers (bioSAP) into selected diaper products, starting with its Moltex Pure and Nature brand. This shift replaces conventional fossil-based SAP in the core absorbent layer, achieving a carbon footprint reduction between 15% and 25% while maintaining product performance.

Superabsorbent polymers are critical for diaper functionality but are among the most carbon-intensive components in personal care products. By adopting bioSAP, Ontex aims to reduce its environmental impact without compromising on quality, affordability or comfort.

“Every step forward must strike the right balance between environmental ambition and practical solutions,” says Annick De Poorter, Chief Innovation & Sustainability Officer. “That means moving fast where we can, keeping products affordable, and making choices that are smart in design and more sustainable by default”.

REDUCING SCOPE 3 EMISSIONS THROUGH RAW MATERIAL INNOVATION

According to Ontex, raw materials account for about 80% of the company’s Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, with SAP and synthetic nonwovens representing roughly half. The introduction of bioSAP supports the company’s SBTi-approved target of reducing Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030.

Initially limited to selected SKUs, the rollout of bioSAP is part of a broader roadmap toward scaling sustainable innovations across Ontex’s global product portfolio and with retail partners.

“Consumers today want sustainable products that don’t compromise on affordability, quality, or comfort”, says Laurent Nielly, President Europe division. “By taking this step now, we’re laying the groundwork for future breakthroughs. We invite our partners to collaborate with us in scaling up bioSAP and other sustainable innovations, so together we can meet market demands and drive sustainable growth, living up to our promise to be ‘Here for you. Here for the better’”.

Current SAP technologies are not recyclable or industrially compostable, but Ontex is closely monitoring innovations in biodegradable SAP. The company sees this development as a key enabler for circular solutions in the future and continues investing in research and collaboration with partners to scale impact.
