Metsä Tissue moves ahead with the modernization of its plant in Mariestad, Sweden

The investment aims to expand sustainable production and reduce tissue imports into Scandinavia

Metsä Tissue is continuing with the modernization and expansion of its plant in Mariestad, Sweden. The project, which began in 2023, includes the installation of three paper machines and nine converting lines, as well as the creation of 100 new direct jobs. The renovated unit is expected to start operating in the second half of 2025.

The initiative, considered Metsä Tissue’s largest investment and one of the most significant in the sector in Europe, will increase the availability of locally and sustainably produced tissue. Currently, around 40% of tissue consumption in Scandinavia is supplied by imports.

With an investment of 370 million euros, the plant will have an annual production capacity of 145,000 tons and will have a fully automated high-capacity warehouse. In addition, modernization is part of the company’s strategy to eliminate fossil carbon emissions by 2030.

The Mariestad plant reinforces Metsä Tissue’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in tissue production in the region, strengthening its Lambi, Serla and Katrin brands.
