Kimberly-Clark develops alternative fiber for paper products in the United States
The company patented a technology platform based on hesperaloe fibers, a drought-tolerant plant, as a potential alternative to wood fiber
Kimberly-Clark, a U.S. company, is advancing the development of a technology platform that transforms fibers from hesperaloe, a drought-tolerant succulent plant, into a material with potential applications in paper products. The company has patented the technology as part of its efforts to identify alternative fiber sources that could reduce dependence on forest resources.
The development remains in its early stages. Before selecting hesperaloe, Kimberly-Clark researchers evaluated more than 70 alternative fiber sources, including wheat straw, algae and other materials. The company has invested approximately US$250 million in its Alternative Natural Fiber program and holds more than 30 patents related to this research.
Hesperaloe requires less water than many other plant species, and its leaves can provide a rapidly renewable source of natural fiber. Kimberly-Clark continues to evaluate its performance and potential to contribute to a more resilient supply chain with less dependence on traditional fiber sources.
As a next step, the company is building a pilot facility in Yuma, Arizona, to evaluate hesperaloe’s potential as a year-round fiber source. The project involves collaboration with farmers and technical specialists in Arizona, California and other areas of the southwestern United States.
