Metsä Group forecasts operating loss for Q2 2025
Weakened demand in Europe and China, along with U.S. import duty concerns, forces Metsä Board to cut paperboard production beyond initial plans

Metsä Group has revised its second-quarter financial outlook, now projecting a comparable operating loss of approximately EUR -35 million for the April–June 2025 period. The update marks a sharp downturn from the EUR 81 million profit reported for the first quarter and is considerably lower than the company’s previous estimate.
The group attributed the decline primarily to weak demand for market pulp in both Europe and China. In addition, uncertainty surrounding U.S. import duties has negatively influenced purchasing behaviour, especially among paperboard customers.
As a result, Metsä Board, a subsidiary of Metsä Group, was forced to scale back paperboard production more aggressively than initially planned.
Metsä Group will release its half-year report for January–June 2025 on 31 July 2025 at 12:00.
