Cascades secures SBTi approval for 2035 greenhouse gas reduction targets

Company aims to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 67.2% from 2019 levels and reduce selected Scope 3 emissions by 41.3%

Cascades announced that the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved its new greenhouse gas reduction targets for 2035, reinforcing the company’s decarbonization strategy.

The company aims to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 67.2% compared with 2019 levels. For Scope 3, the target is a 41.3% reduction in emissions associated with purchased goods and services, fuel- and energy-related activities, upstream transportation and distribution, and the end-of-life treatment of sold products.

The commitments are part of Cascades’ fifth Sustainability Plan, launched in June. Between 2019 and 2025, the company reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 32.6%.

Cascades also reported that its 2025 emissions were 25% below the North American paper industry average, according to a comparison using FisherSolve data.

To advance its decarbonization goals, the company plans to implement additional energy efficiency projects, reduce energy consumption across its operations, electrify selected equipment and increase its sourcing of renewable electricity.

Cascades President and CEO Hugues Simon said the SBTi validation recognizes the credibility of the company’s decarbonization roadmap, which is supported by established action plans, innovation and investment.
