Essity’s net zero emissions targets validated by SBTi

Hygiene and health company aimed to achieve net zero emissions across its value chain by 2050, with near-term targets set for significant reductions by 2030

Essity, a global leader in hygiene and health, has had its targets for achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This validation encompasses all the company’s near- and long-term goals across Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. The plan aligns with the U.N. Global Compact’s “Business Ambition for 1.5°C” framework.

Essity’s primary objective is to eliminate emissions throughout its value chain by 2050. In the short term, the company aims to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, which cover internal energy use and purchased energy, by 35% by 2030. Similarly, the target for Scope 3 emissions, which include purchased goods and services, transportation, production waste, and the end-of-life treatment of sold products, has been revised from an 18% reduction to 35% within the same period. These goals are measured against a 2016 baseline.

“Climate change is one of the defining issues of our time, and Essity has made a firm commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Our progress is driven by a sense of urgency throughout the organization, together with a strong innovation focus, and collaboration with customers, partners, and suppliers”, stated Magnus Groth, president and CEO of Essity.
