Jackson Wijaya reinforces commitment to Canada as key hub for global growth
In an exclusive interview with The Globe and Mail, the Domtar owner calls Canada his “first pocket of gold” and outlines future plans for sustainable expansion

Jackson Wijaya, owner of Domtar and CEO of Paper Excellence, has reaffirmed his strong belief in Canada as the foundation for his company’s continued growth. In a rare and exclusive interview with The Globe and Mail, Wijaya described Canada as his “first pocket of gold,” highlighting the country’s political stability, rich natural resources, and skilled workforce as critical factors in his decision to expand operations there nearly two decades ago.
“I’m very thankful to Canada and the people and the government for helping me make it possible,” Wijaya told The Globe and Mail. “I definitely will not do any harm to Canada. Rather, I will continue to contribute.”
Under Wijaya’s leadership, Domtar has grown into one of North America’s largest pulp and paper companies through strategic acquisitions and ongoing reinvestment. The executive emphasized his commitment to responsible forest management and sustainability, with more projects planned to strengthen local communities and protect Canada’s natural resources for generations to come.
This statement comes as Domtar continues to invest heavily in modernizing its mills and exploring new conversion projects that promise to create jobs and drive innovation across the sector.
“I still have faith that the Canadian people and the Canadian government will allow me to continue my investments in Canada,” Wijaya said. “I can envision further growth.”
