The National Council for Air and Stream Improvement, Inc. (NCASI) has opened a position for a Senior Research Engineer focused on environmental and technical challenges across the forest products industry.
The role is based in Gainesville/Newberry, Florida, or Atlanta, Georgia, with occasional travel to meetings, conferences and manufacturing facilities. The position is classified as exempt and requires a work schedule of at least 40 hours per week, depending on business demands.
NCASI has worked for more than 80 years as a research partner to the forest products industry, providing scientific research and technical information to support companies in meeting environmental and sustainability goals.
TECHNICAL EXPERTISE IN THE FOREST PRODUCTS INDUSTRY
The successful candidate will be responsible for applying engineering principles in chemical manufacturing, reaction engineering and environmental science to technical studies involving emissions, releases and the environmental fate of organic compounds and other toxic substances.
The position will also serve as a technical resource for NCASI and its members, supporting the planning and execution of studies and the development of data analysis tools covering a broad range of environmental and regulatory topics.
Among the main responsibilities are planning and conducting technical studies related to emissions, wastewater treatment, environmental releases and potential off-site impacts associated with pulp, paperboard and wood products manufacturing and converting operations.
The engineer will also be expected to develop expertise in air and water regulations applicable to the forest products industry and assess how emissions and environmental impact data are used in establishing and implementing environmental standards.
Another area of responsibility will involve evaluating variability and uncertainty in environmental data and developing approaches to incorporate these factors into environmental decision-making.
DATA ANALYSIS AND REGULATORY SUPPORT
The position will include developing and applying models and tools to estimate secondary impacts of pollutants, as well as adapting those tools to scenarios relevant to NCASI and companies across the forest products sector.
The professional will be responsible for analyzing data, preparing technical summaries and developing project reports and original technical studies. The role will also involve presenting findings at NCASI meetings, webcasts and other events for both technical and non-technical audiences.
In addition, the Senior Research Engineer will develop technical materials, tools and models that can support NCASI members and regulatory agencies in managing environmental programs.
The position also includes providing technical support to member companies on environmental and regulatory compliance issues and contributing strategic and technical guidance to NCASI, forest products companies, allied industries and trade associations.
REQUIREMENTS AND BENEFITS
NCASI is seeking candidates with a master’s degree in chemical, environmental or related engineering fields and three to five years of experience in manufacturing, process engineering and environmental reporting. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of relevant and broad process engineering experience may also be considered.
Candidates should have a strong understanding of pulp, paperboard, tissue or wood products manufacturing and/or paperboard converting operations. Experience working with interdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder teams, as well as strong communication, data analysis and statistical skills, are also required.
A doctoral degree in a related scientific or engineering discipline is considered an additional qualification.
The position includes a benefits package with medical, dental and vision coverage, a health savings account with employer contribution, a 401(k) plan with company matching, dependent care FSA, life and disability insurance, identity theft protection, supplemental accident and critical illness insurance, and vacation, sick and holiday leave.
Applicants must hold a valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record and be able to work at NCASI offices and travel as required. The role may also involve field sampling activities, including the use of required safety equipment and handling sampling equipment.
Interested candidates should submit a résumé and cover letter by email to Dr. Zach Emerson at zemerson@ncasi.org, copying Tracy Stubbs at tstubbs@ncasi.org, with the position identified in the subject line. Applications will be reviewed immediately and accepted until the position is filled.
