Essity launches world’s first tissue paper machine powered exclusively by geothermal steam

Innovative Project Geotis begins operation ahead of schedule in Kawerau, New Zealand, setting a new sustainability standard

Essity, a hygiene and health company, has successfully launched the start-up phase of the Projec tGeotis in Kawerau, New Zealand, where Paper Machine No. 3 was dismantled and fully modernized. This project introduced a groundbreaking solution: natural gas burners were replaced with a drying system powered exclusively by geothermal steam, making it the world’s first tissue paper machine to operate entirely on this sustainable energy source.

Over the 12 weeks of intensive work, more than 120 local contractors participated in the revitalization activities without any time-loss incidents. The team overcame several challenges common in large-scale projects like this one, demonstrating a remarkable commitment to safety and innovation.

Through this initiative, Essity is setting new standards for sustainable tissue paper production, underscoring its commitment to technologies that reduce environmental impact and promote energy efficiency.
