Metsä Group to invest in three new converting lines for Mariestad tissue mill in Sweden

Investment will enable large-scale production of high quality towels in Scandinavia

Through its toilet tissue and tissue paper business, Metsä Group is investing in three new state-of-the-art converting lines for folded and rolled tissue at its mill in Mariestad, Sweden. This investment will enable large-scale production of high-quality towels in the Scandinavian region, as well as promoting energy efficiency and savings, improving the working environment and safety.

These investments are part of the company’s expansion and modernization project in Mariestad and the strategic Future Mill program, which aims for world-class environmental and operational performance. Metsä is investing SEK 4.2 billion (EUR 370 million) in the expansion and modernization of the Mariestad tissue mill, and the new converting lines are part of this extensive project. The expansion focuses on the sustainable production of fresh fiber, which will account for 80% of the products manufactured at the mill once completed, in the second half of 2025.

In total, the investment includes two new converting lines to produce rolled tissue paper for the consumer market, supplied by Valmet Tissue Converting S.p.A., and a converting line for folded paper towels for professional use. Together, they have a total capacity of 70,000 tons.

“State-of-the-art converting lines with high-efficiency components ensure optimum performance and productivity. Our converting lines feature highly automated, high-quality rewinders, promoting a safer and more efficient working environment. In addition, the latest interfoliator opens doors to explore and develop exciting new products, further enhancing our capabilities,” says Esa Paavolainen, vice president of projects at Metsä Tissue.

Metsä’s Mariestad mill manufactures tissue products sold under the Serla, Lambi and Katrin brands. After the expansion, the mill will have nine converting lines.

The new tissue lines are scheduled to be commissioned in the second and third quarters of 2025. The value of the investments has not been disclosed.
