Sofidel starts up new biomass boiler at its Frouard plant in France

The initiative is expected to reduce over 9,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually and support the group’s decarbonization strategy

Sofidel has started up a new biomass boiler at its Frouard plant, located in the Grand Est region of France, as part of its strategy to reduce emissions and expand the use of renewable energy across its operations.

The project is supported by ADEME under the BCIAT 2022 program and will enable steam generation using biomass instead of natural gas, resulting in an estimated annual reduction of approximately 9,100 metric tons of CO₂ emissions.

The new installation complements an existing biomass boiler operating at the site since 2014. Together, both units will cover around 95% of the steam required for the plant’s paper machines, while natural gas will be limited to peak demand periods and backup use.

The startup follows shortly after the completion of an expansion plan at the group’s facilities in Inola, Oklahoma, in the United States, reflecting Sofidel’s continued industrial investments across its operations.

Sofidel, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, continues to pursue a decarbonization strategy based on increasing the use of renewable energy through a multi-option approach tailored to local conditions, linking sustainability with innovation in processes, products, and logistics.
