Domtar to indefinitely suspend operations at its Coosa Pines plant
The decision reflects challenging market conditions and high operating costs linked to aging assets
Domtar announced that it will indefinitely suspend operations at its pulp mill in Coosa Pines, Alabama, starting in May 2026, as part of a strategic review of its industrial operations.
According to the company, the decision is driven by challenging market conditions and the aging infrastructure of the facility, which has resulted in high maintenance and operating costs.
Domtar stated that it will implement a phased shutdown process to ensure a safe and orderly transition. The company also committed to supporting affected employees through career transition resources, benefits guidance, and ongoing communication during the process.
Domtar is a leading manufacturer of diversified forest products in North America, employing nearly 14,000 people across more than 60 locations. The company has an annual production capacity of approximately 7.2 million metric tons of pulp, paper, packaging, and tissue, in addition to wood products.
