Essity expands patented coreless technology to strengthen sustainable product portfolio
Innovation eliminates cardboard cores, reduces waste and CO2 emissions, and is being rolled out across additional product categories and markets
Essity is expanding the reach of its patented coreless technology by introducing it to new product categories and European markets. This year, the hygiene and health company is launching the innovation in France through its Lotus Just-1 toilet paper, a premium product recognized for its high performance, now featuring a tube-free design and paper-based packaging to further improve its environmental profile.
First introduced in 2018 after seven years of research and development, Essity’s coreless technology eliminates the cardboard tube traditionally found in toilet paper and household towel rolls. The design allows for long-lasting double rolls while reducing waste, offering consumers a more practical and sustainable solution.
The technology has already been adopted in several European markets, including France, Germany, the UK, the Benelux region and Finland. Following the launch of Lotus Just-1 Coreless in France, Essity plans to introduce the product under its Zewa brand in Germany in the fourth quarter of 2025, with additional rollouts across Europe scheduled for 2026 and 2027.
According to the company, the innovation contributes to lower environmental impacts throughout the value chain. Essity estimates that its coreless toilet paper and household towel products can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 6%, while their compact format cuts the number of trucks and warehouse space required to transport and store the same volume of products by approximately one-third.
For the Lotus Just-1 range, the company has also replaced plastic packaging with paper made from renewable materials, aligning the product with its climate goals and broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions.
Essity states that it is the first and only company to establish coreless toilet paper and household towels in consumer markets. The company sees the technology as a key driver of sustainable innovation, business growth and an enhanced consumer experience.
