Metsä Group inaugurates one of Europe’s most advanced tissue paper mills in Sweden
Metsä Tissue’s €370 million investment in Mariestad has doubled the facility’s production capacity and introduced state-of-the-art technology to enhance operational efficiency and environmental performance
Metsä Group has officially inaugurated the expanded and modernized tissue paper mill in Mariestad, Sweden, marking a major milestone in its strategy to strengthen production capacity and support the growing demand for hygiene products across Europe.
The opening ceremony took place on May 26 and was attended by external stakeholders, customers, and executives from Metsä Group and Metsä Tissue. The project represents a €370 million investment, making it one of the largest investments in the European tissue industry in recent years.
As a result of the expansion, the mill’s annual production capacity has doubled to approximately 145,000 tonnes. According to the company, the additional capacity will help improve the availability of high-quality tissue products across Scandinavia while strengthening supply reliability for customers.
The modernization project included the installation of a new state-of-the-art tissue machine and three new converting lines for rolled and folded tissue products. These upgrades are designed to improve production efficiency and support the manufacturing of products for Metsä Tissue’s brands, including Lambi, Serla, and Katrin.
In addition to increasing capacity, the investment is expected to deliver significant environmental benefits. The company reported that the new technologies improve energy efficiency, reduce water consumption, and lower emissions per tonne of tissue produced.
Metsä Group stated that the project aligns with its strategy of strengthening local manufacturing, enhancing supply chain resilience, and supporting sustainable growth in the European tissue market.
The expanded Mariestad mill began operations in autumn 2025 and is now fully operational, providing a strong foundation for the future growth of Metsä Tissue’s business.
