Sofidel strengthens its U.S. presence with strategic acquisition of ST Paper in Duluth, Minnesota

The company strengthens its leadership with a strategic acquisition in the Upper Midwest, reaffirming its commitment to expansion and sustainability in the US

Sofidel has marked another milestone in its expansion in the United States by acquiring ST Paper’s paper mill in Duluth, Minnesota, located in the Upper Midwest.

The new acquisition translates into significant production capacity, reaching 65,000 metric tons per year. The plant, which currently employs eighty workers, operates with state-of-the-art technology, stands out for its efficiency and advanced technological capabilities.

Luigi Lazzareschi, Sofidel’s CEO, expressed the strategic importance of this acquisition, stating: “This is an important acquisition that allows us to immediately meet the growing demand, which experienced a significant upturn in 2023. What we are acquiring is a technologically advanced plant that further enhances our geographic coverage and creates the conditions to strengthen and sustain growth in what is our main market.”

Notably, this investment follows the recent organic expansion at Sofidel’s integrated plant in Circleville, Ohio. The project, currently under development, includes the construction of a new building to house an additional machine with the capacity to produce 70,000 tons per year. It is expected to be operational in the third quarter of 2025. With a total capacity of 200,000 tons per year, Circleville will become Sofidel’s main production center globally. This reflects the company’s continued commitment to sustainable growth and strategic expansion in the U.S. market.
