By 2030, Metsä Group aims to achieve a 30% reduction in fossil-based carbon dioxide emissions from its wood supply compared to the 2022 level. Most emissions associated with wood supply result from transportation by lorry, train, and ship to the mills for processing.
To support this goal, Metsä Group has partnered with AtoB@C Shipping, a key shipping provider for wood transport in the Baltic Sea region, to jointly decrease wood transport emissions by 30% from the 2022 baseline by 2030.
“Metsä Group’s emissions reduction target requires tangible plans and committed logistics partnerships enabling us to systematically move towards our 2030 target. In Metsä Group’s emissions reduction roadmap, the commitments made with our partners now encompass more than 90% of wood transports by sea”, stated Hannu Alarautalahti, senior vice president of Production for Metsä Group Wood Supply and Forest Services.
AtoB@C Shipping is currently implementing a significant investment program, which includes introducing 12 hybrid electric vessels to modernize its fleet by 2026. Emissions reductions will also result from enhancements in operational efficiency, such as the Virtual Arrival concept, as well as advancements in energy solutions at ports and the use of renewable bunker fuel.
Metsä Forest, a subsidiary of Metsäliitto Cooperative, provides and develops services for the members of Metsä Group’s parent company, ensuring the procurement of all wood utilized by Metsä Group’s production units.
