Georgia-Pacific donates $500,000 to rural hospitals in Alabama
The funds will support three healthcare facilities in Escambia and Monroe counties amid ongoing financial challenges in the rural healthcare system
Georgia-Pacific has announced a $500,000 donation to three rural hospitals in the state of Alabama, United States, aimed at strengthening access to essential healthcare services in underserved communities.
The funds, provided through the company’s Brewton Containerboard and Alabama River Cellulose operations, will be allocated to Monroe County Hospital, DW McMillan Hospital, and Atmore Community Hospital, all of which face financial pressures within the rural healthcare system.
According to industry data, 84% of hospitals in Alabama operate at a loss, while 42% of the population lives in rural areas and 7% of counties lack hospital access. Nationwide, more than 140 rural hospitals have closed over the past decade, according to the National Rural Health Association.
In this context, the donation is expected to help strengthen the financial stability of the recipient hospitals and ensure the continuity of essential medical services, including primary care, maternity, and emergency services.
Monroe County Hospital and DW McMillan Hospital each received $225,000, while Atmore Community Hospital was granted $50,000.
Hospital representatives stated that the funding will support operational stability, infrastructure improvements, and continued access to healthcare services for local communities, particularly in regions with limited medical resources.
The initiative reflects Georgia-Pacific’s commitment to supporting the communities where it operates, contributing to improved access to essential services and the sustainability of rural healthcare systems.
