“Green Santos” arrives in China carrying 72 thousand tons of Suzano pulp

The world's largest pulp carrier completed its maiden voyage, bringing the company's exclusive pulp to the Asian market

Suzano, a global reference in the manufacture of bioproducts developed from eucalyptus cultivation, and Cosco Shipping Specialized Carriers, one of the largest shipping companies in the world, are celebrating the completion of the first voyage of the “Green Santos”, the name given to the world’s largest pulp carrier.

The ship, which left the Port of Santos in São Paulo on March 4, arrived last week, loaded with 72 thousand tons of pulp exclusively from Suzano, destined for the Asian market.

In addition to optimizing the company’s logistics efficiency, the capacity of the “Green Santos” will also contribute to a reduction in the carbon footprint per tonne transported.

The vessel was delivered to Suzano at the end of 2023 and is part of a fleet of vessels of similar size that will be delivered this year. According to the company, the initiative aims to meet the expected increase in pulp exports from Suzano’s new mill under construction in Ribas do Rio Pardo, in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

Known as the Closed Project, the unit, which will be in operation until June 2024, will increase Suzano’s total capacity to 13.5 million tons per year, and its production will be shipped from the port of Santos, on the São Paulo coast, where the first shipment of “Green Santos” was made.

Cellulose represents 2.8% of Brazilian exports, according to data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, as of March 2024. Of this total, almost 30% is destined for China, Brazil’s largest importer of pulp.
