Metsä Group boosts its innovative bioproducts plant in kemi to full capacity production
The EUR 2.02 billion investment promises to position the plant as a leader in environmental and energy efficiency

Metsä Group has reported that the Kemi bioproducts mill, located in Kemi, Finland, is moving towards full production capacity and has started pulp deliveries to its customers. The plant is projected to reach full capacity in approximately one year, following its recent start-up scheduled for September 20. This achievement marks a significant step in the development of the facility, highlighting the company’s outstanding contribution to the bioproducts sector.
Tomi Seppä, mill manager of the bioproduct mill said “When starting up a mill of this size, it is already clear that the production process must be optimized and the right process conditions must be sought to ensure continuous efficient production and high product quality” “We have been actively working on this with our equipment suppliers and the work has paid off. Production continuity, production volumes and product quality have developed in the right direction”
“Full production capacity will be reached as planned in autumn next year,” Seppä added.
“At the woodyard, we also introduced new technology for unloading wood raw material and feeding it into the process, the first in the world. Building and fine-tuning the autonomy of the woodyard’s autonomous cranes and training the staff requires time to achieve flawless operation. This, too, is progressing according to the planned program, and the efficiency and quality of the woodyard operations are constantly improving,” Seppä noted.
The construction of the bioproducts mill in Kemi, Finland, which started in February 2021 and will be completed in approximately two and a half years, represents an investment of €2.02 billion. With a production capacity of 1.5 million tons per year of softwood and hardwood pulp, as well as the generation of 2 terawatt hours of renewable electricity, the mill stands out for its relevance in the production of various bioproducts. This new facility is positioned as a world leader in terms of environmental and energy efficiency, meeting the emission limits set by the environmental permit of Metsä Group’s former pulp mill in Kemi, which was dismantled to make way for this innovative mill.
Metsä Group continues to lead the way in advancing the bioeconomy, focusing on growth sectors within the forest industry, including wood supply and forest services, wood products, pulp, fresh fiberboard, as well as tissue and greaseproof paper.
