Metsä Group to invest 100 million euros in its tissue paper mill in Mänttä, Finland

The aim is to develop the sustainability of operations and to modernize and extend the mill's life cycle

Metsä Group has unveiled plans for an ambitious investment program to improve sustainability and modernize operations at its tissue mill in Mänttä. With a planned investment of approximately EUR 100 million over the next five years, the company aims to achieve world-class efficiency and environmental performance in tissue production.

The main objective of the program is to improve the mill’s production and environmental efficiency by investing in new paper machines and modernizing converting lines, as well as increasing energy and water efficiency. In addition, Metsä Group also aims to maintain local manufacturing operations in Mänttä in the long term and fulfill its commitment to make all products and manufacturing sites fossil-free by 2030.

Joonas Kukkonen, Vice President Supply Chain, Metsä Tissue Finland and Baltics, said, “The investment program strengthens Finland’s self-sufficiency in locally produced essential hygiene products and enables us to modernize our operations in Mänttä. The plans will strengthen our focus on high-quality fresh fiber-based hygiene products that originate from sustainably managed northern forests. Our Katrin, Lambi and Serla products will bring the benefits of the investments to Finnish consumers.”

As part of this program, an investment in a new hand towel production line, expected to be operational by 2025, will be initiated with a special focus on the Finnish market.

Kukkonen said, “Locally manufactured tissue products generate local jobs and create resilience in society. The planned investment program at the Mänttä mill is a logical continuation of our ongoing investment in Future Mill in Mariestad, Sweden and our planned investment in a tissue mill in the UK, as well as several other investments in our international mill fleet. We will now also modernize our operations in Finland.”
