Metsä Tissue participates in the groundbreaking ceremony for Modellfabrik Papier in Germany
New research center aims to reduce CO₂ emissions in paper production by up to 80%

The groundbreaking ceremony for Modellfabrik Papier gGmbH’s new building last Friday marked an important step towards the sustainable future of the paper industry. Located in the Düren Innovation Quarter in Germany, the research center will be dedicated to developing solutions aimed at reducing CO2 emissions by up to 80% in production processes.
The building will house around 50 scientists from all over Germany, who will work on developing more efficient and resource-saving processes for the paper industry.
A shareholder in Modellfabrik Papier gGmbH since July 2023, Metsä Tissue is reinforcing its commitment to the sustainable transformation of the sector. “Metsä Tissue has been an official partner of Modellfabrik Papier since July 1, 2023. In doing so, we are not only strengthening Düren as a research location – one of the largest paper production sites in Germany – but also taking responsibility for the sustainable transformation of our industry”, said Dr. Alexander Deutschle, the company’s vice president of innovations.
The initiative demonstrates how collaboration between companies, research centers and public bodies can accelerate decarbonization and innovation in the paper sector.
