Metsä Tissue strengthens climate commitment and extends emissions reduction targets to 2030
The company expands its initiatives to include the entire value chain, aiming for a total 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

Metsä Tissue is stepping up its actions to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout its value chain. The company has set ambitious targets for 2030, including the total elimination of direct and indirect emissions in its operations (Scopes 1 and 2) and an 8% reduction in supply chain emissions (Scope 3). In total, Metsä Tissue aims to reduce its GHG emissions by 50%, surpassing the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) minimum requirement of 43% and aligning itself with the Paris Agreement.
To achieve these goals, the company is investing in various sustainable initiatives:
- Scope 1: conversion of factories to the exclusive use of renewable fuels, eliminating the use of fossil fuels.
- Scope 2: purchasing electricity, steam and heat exclusively from renewable sources.
- Scope 3: reducing emissions in the value chain by adopting biofuels in transport, partnering with suppliers to minimize emissions and improving energy efficiency.
In addition to reducing the environmental impact of its operations, Metsä Tissue reinforces that its strategy benefits its customers, who depend on sustainable suppliers to achieve their own climate goals.
PROGRESS ALREADY MADE SINCE 2018
The commitment to decarbonization is not new. Since 2018, Metsä Tissue has made significant progress on its targets, already reducing more than 40% of Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions. The volume of emissions fell from 674 ktCO2 to 384 ktCO2 in 2024. This result was made possible by continued investments in clean energy sources, such as the replacement of peat with renewable wood at the Mänttä plant and the conversion of the Kreuzau plant from coal to wood pellets.
The external audit carried out for Metsä Group’s 2024 sustainability report ensures that Metsä Tissue’s climate efforts are in line with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and international standards, guaranteeing transparency and credibility in the company’s actions.
