Paper Excellence is recognized for its clean technology innovation as a sustainable solution

The company won the “Corporate Pioneer of the Year Award” at the annual Foresight Canada BC Cleantech Awards

Paper Excellence Canada has been awarded the “Corporate Pioneer of the Year” at the annual Foresight Canada BC Cleantech Awards, an annual event to recognize inspiring change-makers from across British Columbia that are leading the charge to a net-zero economy.

The Corporate Pioneer of the Year Award recognizes a large organization or company adopting, championing or leading sustainable practices in their industry. Paper Excellence was nominated alongside other great companies, including Copper Mountain Mining Corp., Shell, FortisBC, and the Port of Vancouver.

“We are very proud to be recognized for efforts we started decades ago when we made a bet and took early action on decarbonization”, said Graham Kissack, Vice President Environmental, Health and Safety, and Corporate Communications for Paper Excellence Canada. “As an organization we have reduced our carbon emissions by 66% since 1990 through fuel switching and dramatic improvements in energy efficiency. And that’s brought us to today where our energy mix is 85% renewable. We are not stopping as we look to continue to partner with BC’s Innovators to help us get to net-zero and even perhaps net-negative emissions”.

“This award highlights all the effort that Paper Excellence has made to innovate in its processes, not only in decarbonization, but to offer truly sustainable products”, said Sabrina de Branco, Global Vice President of Sustainability at Paper Excellence in an exclusive interview to the Portal Celulose. “We have been investing in equipment and process improvements and our estimate is that we can still reduce our emissions in Canada by another 17%, which represents 32,000 tons of carbon equivalent that we are going to remove from the atmosphere”, added Sabrina.

In the Paper Excellence factories, more than 80% of the energy used comes from renewable sources, such as biomass. The production units also use ISO-14001 environmental management systems, the best available technology to minimize carbon emissions. In addition, all the fiber used in the factories is extracted from planted forests and in compliance with environmental, forestry and labor laws.
