Talladega community unites as Georgia-Pacific donates US$10,000 to support families displaced by Brentwood Apartments fire

The donation will provide essential resources and immediate relief for families affected by last month’s devastating fire

The community of Talladega is showing strong support for several families who were displaced by the fire that struck the Brentwood Apartments last month. On Thursday morning, staff from Georgia-Pacific’s Talladega facility handed a US$10,000 check to Valerie Burrage, director of United Way of North Talladega County.

“These funds will directly go toward benefiting these families in need”, Burrage stated.

The fire, which occurred last month, left at least eight families without a place to live, according to Talladega Fire Chief Danny Warwick. The blaze destroyed the roofs of eight three-bedroom apartments, and Warwick noted that any parts of the buildings that weren’t damaged by the flames were likely ruined by the water used to extinguish the fire.

Robin Bennefield, Georgia-Pacific’s plant administrator, explained that the company felt compelled to assist after several employees expressed concern.

“Thankfully, none of our staff were affected, but we do have some who live in the complex, so it really hit close to home for them. We wanted to do what we could to help take the burden off these families”, Bennefield said.

Burrage emphasized the importance of this support during such a critical time: “This significant contribution will directly aid in providing essential resources such as temporary housing, clothing, food, and counseling services to those affected by this disaster”, she explained. “GP’s compassion and commitment to our community not only provide immediate relief but also offer hope and comfort to families in their time of need”.

She further expressed gratitude, saying: “We are truly grateful for Georgia-Pacific’s unwavering support and dedication to making a positive impact. Their involvement plays a crucial role in helping us rebuild lives and restore a sense of normalcy for the affected families”.
