Essity boosts efficiency and sustainability at Prudhoe, UK plant
Strategic alliance drives innovations to optimize performance and safety in manufacturing processes

Essity has successfully completed the upgrade of its tissue air drying (TAD) machine in Prudhoe, UK. The company has worked closely with Andritz, who supplied new equipment, including a new gas valve train and a burner management system to electronically control the air/gas ratio, to optimize the combustion process at all burner capacities. This advance will result in an increase in burner efficiency and a reduction in gas consumption of up to 4%. In addition, a significant decrease in CO2 and NOx emissions is expected, as well as safety improvements.
According to Lee McDonald, project engineer at the Essity Prudhoe mill, He stated “Our close cooperation with Andritz Novimpianti has enabled a quick and trouble-free commissioning of the upgraded combustion system. With this upgrade we have not only optimized the performance of our burners, but also made our operations safer and more sustainable. Andritz’s customized approach met our needs perfectly.”
For his part, Gianni Pellini, project manager at Andritz Novimpianti, added “We are very honored that Essity is trusting us again for this project and we are happy to continue our close collaboration for the production of sustainable tissue.”
