Georgia-Pacific announces closure of Cedar Springs mill
Decision driven by competitiveness; company pledges support for affected employees

Georgia-Pacific announced on Wednesday, May 14, that it will permanently shut down operations at its containerboard mill in Cedar Springs later this year. According to the company, most positions will be eliminated by August 1, affecting approximately 535 employees. No specific closure date has been disclosed.
“Various factors influenced this difficult decision. Ultimately, we do not believe that the mill can competitively serve our customers in the long term. This decision has nothing to do with the quality of work of Georgia-Pacific’s employees at the Cedar Springs mill,” the company stated in its official announcement.
Georgia-Pacific also said it plans to support workers during the transition by providing access to local job placement resources and support agencies. Earlier this month, the company had already closed its plywood mill in Emporia, Virginia.
