Canfor Corporation and Canfor Pulp Products have released their 2024 Sustainability Report, outlining the key milestones of the previous year in their ESG journey. The report reaffirms the companies’ commitment to responsible forestry, employee development, and long-term environmental goals, with a spotlight on the ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
According to Stephen Mackie, President and CEO of Canfor Pulp, sustainability is a core pillar of the business. “Sustainability is core to our business at Canfor Pulp, from the forest to our manufacturing processes and our finished products. Despite a challenging year, we have continued our focus on sustainability performance, operating safely, and producing high-quality pulp and paper products for customers worldwide,” he said.
On the environmental front, Canfor has maintained 100% certification of its managed forests under internationally recognized standards such as SFI and FSC. All fiber sourced for its North American operations complies with the SFI Fiber Sourcing Standard. The company also holds PEFC and FSC Chain of Custody certifications, ensuring responsible sourcing throughout the supply chain.
In terms of operations, the company has taken new steps to enhance workplace health and safety, including the creation of a global safety forum and the rollout of leadership development programs aimed at building skills and expanding career opportunities.
Social investment also remains a priority. Through its Good Things Come From Trees initiative, Canfor has contributed over $2 million to community-focused projects such as disaster relief, scholarships for future forestry professionals, and sports sponsorships in Sweden.
The report also details Canfor’s decarbonization efforts. With near-term and long-term emissions reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the company is advancing its climate strategy while powering operations with approximately 80% renewable energy.
