Kruger Inc. advances US$700 million investment project in Corner Brook
The diversification initiative includes industrial modernization, renewable energy expansion and infrastructure upgrades at the Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited mill
Kruger Inc. announced progress in its US$700 million diversification project for the Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited (CBPPL) mill after the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador issued a non-binding letter of intent aimed at supporting the facility’s operational continuity.
According to the company, the measure includes the provincial government’s intention to extend the mill’s current power purchase agreement with NL Hydro for an additional 12 months, providing operational stability while the project continues to be evaluated.
Kruger stated that the initiative aims to transform the Corner Brook mill into a modern, competitive and sustainable manufacturing complex. The project includes upgrades to existing operations, infrastructure improvements and investments to expand renewable energy capacity and modernize existing hydroelectric facilities.
The company noted that the project is expected to position the mill among the most competitive facilities of its kind in Canada, while also strengthening related forestry operations and maintaining high-quality jobs connected to the regional industry.
Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited is currently the only operating paper mill in Newfoundland and Labrador and is considered a key component of the province’s integrated forestry and sawmill industry. The company highlighted the facility’s contribution to regional economic development and support for rural communities.
Kruger also emphasized that, due to the scale and complexity of the project, continued coordination among different levels of government, the forestry industry and other stakeholders will be essential to support the mill’s future and maximize economic benefits for the province.
Founded in Montreal in 1904, Kruger Inc. operates in tissue, recycled containerboard, specialty papers, pulp and renewable energy, while also maintaining a strong presence in paper and cardboard recycling across North America.
