J.D. Irving student program helps develop future professionals through hands-on experience

Business student Emily Fisher has gained experience in marketing, human resources and business improvement during three summers with the company

J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) continues to strengthen its commitment to developing future talent through its student program, which provides participants with practical experience across different areas of the business. One example is Emily Fisher, a fourth-year Business student at Acadia University, whose journey reflects the program’s focus on professional growth and real-world learning.

Originally from Rothesay, New Brunswick, Fisher is pursuing interests in both marketing and human resources. “I really enjoy marketing for its creative side, but I’m equally drawn to HR because I love working with people and improving how teams operate,” she said.

Now in her third summer with JDI, Fisher has worked in several business units. She began as a Marketing Student with KENT Building Supplies, supporting major marketing campaigns, before joining Corporate Human Resources, where she contributed to recruitment initiatives and data governance projects.

This summer, she is part of the HR Shared Services team as a Business Improvement Student, supporting an enterprise-wide initiative aimed at streamlining processes and enhancing the employee experience.

“It’s been really rewarding to be part of a project with broad organizational impact and to see it through from beginning to end,” Emily said.

Beyond her work placements, Fisher serves as Vice President Internal of the Acadia Business Society and Co-Chair of the Business Banquet at Acadia University. She is also a recipient of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, recognizing her leadership, dedication and personal development.

According to JDI, the student program is designed to prepare participants for their careers by combining classroom knowledge with practical experience. Reflecting on her journey, Fisher highlighted the impact of the program on her personal and professional growth.

“A work term at JDI pushes you beyond the classroom,” she said. “When I think about my first work term at JDI compared to now, I can really see how much I’ve grown.”
