Renova launches €11 million decarbonization project at Portugal tissue mill
The initiative at the company's Factory 2 in Torres Novas is expected to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO₂ emissions by more than 50% compared with 2020 levels and is part of a broader investment program focused on industrial modernization and energy transition
Renova has officially launched its Descarbonizar@Renova project at Factory 2 in Torres Novas, Portugal, following an investment of €11 million aimed at advancing the company’s energy transition and reducing the carbon footprint of its industrial operations.
According to the company, the initiative is expected to cut Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by more than 50% compared with 2020 levels. The project’s main component is the installation of a biomass energy plant, replacing natural gas with a renewable energy source to generate the thermal energy required for tissue paper production.
Renova said the project is part of a broader investment strategy in Torres Novas and the surrounding region. Over the past few years, the company has invested approximately €152 million in upgrading its manufacturing facilities, expanding production capacity, improving energy efficiency, digitalizing industrial processes, optimizing logistics, enhancing environmental performance, and driving product and operational innovation.
The inauguration took place during a visit by Portugal’s Secretary of State for Energy to the company’s facilities and marked the completion of the project, which was financed through the country’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
