Kimberly-Clark Australia leads transition to green hydrogen in manufacturing industry

Innovative initiative promises to transform tissue production with more sustainable practices

Kimberly-Clark Australia, the country’s leading manufacturer of tissue products, has announced a new initiative that could change the landscape of the manufacturing industry. Accordingly, the entX technology development company will embark on an ambitious project by selling a 49 percent stake in its Limestone Coast Hydrogen Project (LCH2 Project). This project aims to produce green hydrogen specifically for Kimberly-Clark Australia.

The Kimberly-Clark Australia factory, located in Millicent in southeastern South Australia, is known for its Kleenex and Viva brands, as well as its professional bathroom products. To carry out this project, entX has the support of DGA, a company with vast experience in renewable energy and green hydrogen projects worldwide.

To ensure the success of the LCH2 project, it has been meticulously planned in several stages. In Stage 1, it is expected to produce 3.65 tons per day of green hydrogen, which will be blended with 20 percent natural gas for use in the plant. Subsequently, in Stage 2, production will be increased to around 4.5 tons per day, with a target of a complete switch to green hydrogen by 2029.

This project not only has implications for the manufacturing industry, but also for the heavy transport sector, as green hydrogen will be available for use in electric fuel cells in the region.

EntX has expressed its enthusiasm for this collaboration via social media, noting “This milestone marks a pivotal moment in our journey towards the development of clean fuels for Australia’s industrial and manufacturing sectors.”

However, it should be noted that the LCH2 Project is still in the process of finalizing its Feasibility Assessment and is subject to approval. First hydrogen production is expected to take place in 2027, provided a positive final investment decision is made.
