Lucart unveils 19th sustainability report showcasing environmental and social progress

The report highlighted significant reductions in CO2 emissions, water consumption, and energy use, alongside financial growth and increased social commitment

Lucart has recently unveiled its 19th edition of the sustainability report, emphasizing its ongoing dedication to sustainability, transparency, and sharing. The report highlighted the company’s strides in environmental footprint reduction, resource management, and corporate growth.

In 2023, Lucart continued to lower its CO2 emissions, achieving a reduction to 403.75 kg CO2 per ton of paper produced, down from 408.18 kg CO2 in 2022. Water consumption also saw a significant decrease, reaching 9.48 m³ per ton of paper produced, a 35.9% reduction compared to 2013, moving closer to the 2025 target of 9.40 m³ per ton. Over the last decade, specific energy consumption has dropped sharply by 25% compared to 2014.

The use of raw materials remained steady, with 45% virgin pulp and 55% recycled paper. Lucart aims to shift this ratio to 40% and 60% respectively by 2030. The company’s packaging also saw improvements, with 100% being recyclable or compostable by 2021, and 80% containing more than 30% recycled content.

Lucart’s waste recovery target stands at 90% by 2030, with the current recovery rate at 83.7% of total waste produced. These efforts are reflected in the company’s financial performance, with a turnover of EUR 765 million in 2023, a 6.7% increase from 2022, and an EBITDA that more than doubled from the previous year.

The report also noted Lucart’s significant achievements and recognitions, including membership in the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi), the adoption of the AMFORI Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) Code of Conduct, and the goal of certifying all plants with ISO 45001 for health and safety by 2025. Lucart also maintained its platinum rating from the independent agency Ecovadis for the second consecutive year.

For the first time, the presentation event was held at the Save the Children Auditorium in Rome, underscoring Lucart’s long-standing partnership with the international organization dedicated to protecting children’s rights. Since 2020, Lucart has supported three key Save the Children projects: Spazio Mamme, Fiocchi in Ospedale, and Punti Luce.

“We are especially proud of the results achieved in 2023 because they are the most tangible demonstration of how a company can achieve excellent economic performance and a very high level of environmental and social commitment at the same time”, commented Massimo Pasquini, CEO of Lucart.
