Georgia-Pacific invests US$83 million in Palatka mill expansion

Project includes a new automated warehouse and creates 20 new jobs in the region

Georgia-Pacific has announced a new US$83 million investment to build a 400,000-square-foot warehouse at its Palatka, Florida facility. The project aims to boost operational efficiency, integrate advanced technologies, and enhance customer service.

The initiative will create 20 new jobs and expand storage and shipping capacity for retail-focused products. This announcement marks another step in the ongoing modernization of the site, which has received significant investments over the past decade, including the installation of a new paper machine, converting lines, and other upgrades.

“We’re excited to launch this project, which will enhance our operations and help us better serve our customers. This also demonstrates our commitment to innovation and excellence”, said Vin Webster, vice president of manufacturing at the Palatka mill. “This expansion and investment in Putnam County will positively impact the entire region”.

According to Mark Litten, vice president of economic development at the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, the project goes beyond physical expansion. “This warehouse is more than just a building; it represents a substantial investment in our community. The creation of new jobs and improved infrastructure will attract further investments and unlock new opportunities for our region”, he stated.

Construction will take place in two phases. The first involves developing a new trailer yard with space for 500 trailers and a dedicated entrance via County Road 216, aimed at reducing local traffic congestion.

In the second phase, the new automated warehouse will be built, replacing the current trailer yard and connecting to the existing facility. The warehouse will feature state-of-the-art automation technologies, including automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and an automated trailer entry and exit system. Vertical dock levelers will also be used to enhance safety and reduce foot traffic around the building.

Site work on the trailer yard is set to begin in May. Construction of the warehouse will start in February and is expected to take approximately one year.
